--- They are kidding ---
"Sir can speak four languages in Tamil", most of you might know this dialog from the Tamil movie Dasavatharam. It is indeed a goofy statement, but still I was wondering if someone can really speak another language without the influence of one's mother tongue. Ok, let’s not talk about different languages, within one language there are several slangs, dialects which makes tougher to be understood even by the native speaker.
Learning other dialects is also an Interesting stuff to do. After moving from North to South of Germany my favourite pastime is to bug my flatmate for a new word in Bavarian dialect. I had a tough time understanding many of them.
This follows another question, "How about learning other dialects in one's mother tongue"? Okie, let me give a try and explore the slangs of my own TAMIL language. I have encountered almost all the slangs of Tamil, thanks to all my buddies. These dialects includes Kovai accent, Tirunelveli accent, Madurai accent, Thanjavur accent, South Arcot accent, Srilankan accent, Malaysian accent and Madras accent.
I love to learn them, and try to use it whenever possible. I love to see the excitement in the eyes’ of the random people whom I met and talk during my expeditions. As in case of a granny who was working in a paddy field in Tenkasi, a Srilankan gentleman travelling in a local train in Paris, a Malaysian medical student over phone, a cycle rickshaw man on way to Triplicane in Chennai, a Chennai girl in BTM layout, a priest in TNSTC bus enroute Madurai, the list goes on.
Among the different dialects, the one which always impressed me was "Chennai Senthamizh - aka Madras Baashai". This is considered to be the most impure form of Tamil :-) Though it scathes the pure Tamil, there are a few words which are very funny and punning. As the years pass-by, lots of new words are added making it the most Innovative slang of Tamil :-) Specially that one word "O...A" - widely used :-) :-)
I’m rather became so curious to know about this Madras Baashai, while Googling I found an interesting post in Wiki, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madras_Tamil). For all the reader I recommend to have a look in to it when time permits. I am sure loads of fun guaranteed, except you have to bear some lousy words.
