We are the World Champions

By now, after reading the title, one might get an idea about the subject of this post. Yes, indeed it’s CRICKET. Undeniably, our Indian subcontinent’s the most popular game. The game is so flexible, that where ever there is an open space of say 10 sq meters, a version of cricket can be easily played. During my childhood, my evenings are not complete without a game of cricket. I remember I won’t even have enough time to change my school uniform, for the game. A group of five pals, a tennis ball, a bat like wood or even a coconut tree trunk, a unique way to select the first player and the rest gets chance to bat against lose of a wicket.

Our Cricketers, divine souls, worshipped as equally as our family of GODS. We just like them, love to see their advertisements, literally do whatever they direct. For any kid, the favorite personality, role model or whatever will be first a cricketer typically followed by a cine star. Whatever the products they endorse it has gained a very high market share, typically this black colored liquid thing we just drink without having a second thought.

The cricket’s only God Sachin Tendulkar was about to score his hundredth hundred, being a leading run-scorer and century maker in Test and one-day international cricket. In my opinion he has the highest per capita potential to break or make cricket fans. The country had a second Diwali when he scored a double century. A world cup in Sachin’s hand would be a phenomenal feat in the history.

Watching a cricket match is the pinnacle of the worldly pleasures ever invented by humans. It is such an electrifying atmosphere to watch the match with the couple of cricket buffs, it is amazing to hear the parallel commentaries besides the official one in the television. “He must have swept it a bit later”, “it was a nice delivery”,”plum, clean leg before” and other geeky comments, as if we inherit the cricket knowledge from womb. If this is just for a normal game of cricket, then one should imagine how much hype will be in place for a world cup.

Long ago in 1983, India tasted its finest triumph against West Indies. The events of the match have been made a lesson in my high school English curriculum titled “The cup of joy”. Well, like any other lessons it wasn’t so interesting for me, though it is my favorite sport. Probably the effect of the visuals might have a greater influence than just plain English.  But I was longing for such a winning experience like most of the Indian cricket lovers do.

So this world cup 2011 has been a very special event for me, to have such an awesome and splendid experience. Watching the match away from home and being in Germany was a great challenge. Nevertheless it was total fun to see the winning moments. We are the World Champions; the feat that we achieved in the Indian soil in the presence of the Indian crowd is just un-comparable, for me just to watch the match in the TV was simply spine-tingling experience. This final match was like an entire life, which involved happiness, sadness, anger, challenge, friendship, anxiety, joy, taunt and what not.

The Indian cricket fans life is complete with this great victory. Down the years, there can be many more victories to follow for Indian cricket; however this will be a very special one to me. At least I have some interesting stories on cricket to tell my future generations which I always longed to hear from my grandparents.
